Life’s a Journey, Not a Destination By Rabbi David Polsky |
At the very beginning of this week’s parasha, God offers His blessings to us “if you walk in My statutes” (Leviticus 26:3). Rashi believes this phrase to signify our toiling (amelim) in the Torah. One wonders how Rashi makes the exegetical leap from the original text to Torah study. I believe that the explanation lies in the deeper connection between walking and toiling. When God asks that we walk in his ways, He is not asking that we successfully fulfill all of His commandments, but that we continually walk on the path towards Him. “Toiling in the Torah” perfectly expresses these sentiments as well. God does not necessarily expect us to master Judaism; He expects us to seek Him and His Torah. Our struggle and toil with the Torah is therefore more precious to God than any success we might enjoy. Rashi is noticing that walking and toiling are both part of the never-ending journey towards God. |
