We are All Individuals By Rabbi David Polsky |
In Parashat Bamidbar the Israelites are counted according to their heads. The Hasidic master Sefat Emet picks up on this emphasis of the head. Everyone’s faces look different. As the Talmud teaches, just as each individual faces appears different from all others, so too are each person’s thoughts different from others. Such sentiments point to the uniqueness of each person. We all possess our own wisdom about God, Judaism, and life in general that others lack. These teachings remind us of another that each Jewish soul corresponds to a letter of the Torah. Every Jew adds ones perspective to the Torah, which would be incomplete without their unique contribution. |
