Adam and Us
By Rabbi David Polsky

Many midrashic interpretations believe that Adam was created on a Friday and sinned on that day. According to the hasidic master R. Tsadok hakohen of Lublin, when Adam later repented (Bereshit Rabbah 22:13), he realized that it was the very first Sabbath that assisted his path to repentance and forgiveness. Despite his grievous sin, the world upon its completion was still considered “very good” (Genesis 1:31) because of the coming Sabbath. This is because the sanctity of the Sabbath led Adam to regret his sin. Many of us can identify with his principle as we often find ourselves more scrupulous about serving God on the Sabbath. This power of Sabbath to inspire return to God is intensified this Sabbath, as it comes in the middle of an entire week dedicated towards repentance in anticipation of Yom Kippur. May the power of this special Sabbath inspire and direct us to worship God properly and to a chatimah tovah (good sealing).

Please let us know if you would like to read a parsha of the Torah or a Haftorah on Shabbat morning. Please let us know if you would like to sponsor a Kiddush, a Gemara shiur or a Jewish History class.
